Sometimes, it mostly depends on where the tree sits and how big your lot is. See that tree in the planter strip between the sidewalk and the street? It belongs to the city, so you'll need a permit before anyone touches it, and Eugene's Urban Forestry office handles those. On a private parcel of 20,000 square feet or more, you can't fell more than five trees within 12 months without a permit. Smaller lots usually don't need one, though conservation areas play by their own rules. Codes can change, so a quick call to the city or your tree service before the chainsaw comes out saves everyone a headache.
Big dead branches, cracks or splits in the trunk, and mushrooms sprouting near the tree’s base are all red flags. Keep an eye out for a sudden lean too, or soil heaving up around the roots. Here in Eugene, soggy winters soften the ground, and an ice storm can pile more weight on branches than they can handle. Tall Douglas firs and bigleaf maples growing close to the house deserve an extra look after a windy week. If something seems off, a certified arborist can swing by and tell you whether the tree needs a trim or has to go.
A tree service handles pretty much anything involving the trees and shrubs in your yard, from trimming and pruning to taking down a tree that's crowding the house or grinding out a stubborn old stump. Crews also shape overgrown hedges and clear brush off lots headed for a building or landscaping project. Plenty of local companies offer round-the-clock storm cleanup too, which comes in handy during our winter wind and ice events. The best ones will send out an arborist to assess your trees and give you honest advice, even if that advice is to leave a perfectly good tree alone.
First things first, keep everyone away from it, especially if it's touching a power line. Treat any downed line as live and call the Eugene Water & Electric Board or your local utility company right away. Once everyone's safe, snap some photos of the damage for your insurance company before you or anyone else moves a thing. Then reach out to a tree service that offers 24/7 emergency work. A fallen tree can shift without warning, and cutting one that's under tension is a job for a trained crew with the right gear. Some emergency tree companies will even work directly with your insurer, which takes a lot of the stress out of filing a claim.
For most trees, late winter is the sweet spot. That's when they're dormant (basically taking a long winter nap), so pruning cuts seal over quickly once spring growth kicks in, and bare branches make the tree's structure much easier to see. Summer works nicely for light shaping or thinning, especially on fruit trees and ornamentals. Try to skip heavy pruning in early spring while new leaves push out, since trees burn through a lot of stored energy during that stretch. Dead, broken, or hazardous branches are the exception. Take care of those at any time of the year, ideally before the fall and winter storm season rolls in.
